What Is Hematology?

Hematology is the study of the nature, function and diseases of the blood and blood-forming organs. There are many types of blood disorders, from anemia to blood and bone cancers. Our experienced hematologists specialize in treating blood disorders while promoting full-body wellness. We work to diagnose and treat a wide variety of blood conditions, both benign (non-cancerous) and cancerous.

The Role Of Blood In The Body

Blood is a special liquid in the body composed of four main parts: red blood cells, white blood cells, plasma and platelets. According to the American Society of Hematology, the typical man has around 12 pints of blood in his body, while most women have around nine pints! Your blood runs through the the veins, arteries, and capillaries and has many important functions, including:

  • Forming clots to prevent excess blood loss
  • Bringing oxygen to the lungs and tissues
  • Regulating the body’s temperature
  • Fighting infections
  • Carrying waste products to the kidneys and liver to filter out

Common Types of Blood Disorders

Blood disorders are very common and range from bleeding and clotting disorders to cancers. They can affect both adults and children, with around 50 million patients under the age of 20 living with leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma or related conditions, according to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Some of the conditions we treat at HOAF include:

Red blood cells provide vital oxygen to the body, and anemia is a condition that occurs when there are not enough healthy red blood cells. There are several types of anemia, the most common being iron deficiency anemia.

Bleeding disorders refers to a group of conditions that occur when the blood cannot clot properly due to problems with the platelets. This inability to clot can lead to serious consequences, such as excessive bleeding.

Hemophilia is a rare genetic bleeding disorder. Patients with hemophilia experience excessive bleeding due to clotting issues and are at risk for internal bleeding that can negatively impact the organs and joints over time.

Most blood cancers begin in the bone marrow, where the blood is produced. When the normal cell production process is interrupted by an abnormal or cancerous blood cell, the body may have trouble stopping the bleeding or fighting off infections. The three main types include leukemia, a blood cancer found in the bone marrow; lymphoma, which affects the lymphatic system; and myeloma, which is a cancer of the plasma cells.

Blood clotting is a normal process that prevents excess bleeding. A type of red blood cell called platelets and the liquid part of the blood, plasma, are responsible for forming a clot over an injured blood vessel, therefore stopping the bleeding. Unnatural clotting occurs when clots do not dissolve or form inside of a vessel in the veins and arteries throughout the body and can have dangerous effects. However, blood clots are largely preventable through lifestyle changes. According to the American Society of Hematology, around 900,000 people are affected by blood clots each year, leading to approximately 100,000 blood clot-related deaths annually.
