What Causes Side Effects?

Chemotherapy works by killing cancer cells. However, it can also damage healthy cells, which can cause side effects. When it comes to chemo drugs, our team aims to deliver a precise dosage that effectively targets the cancer while providing minimal damage to healthy cells, thereby reducing symptoms and relieving patient discomfort. Our care team will work with you to keep you as comfortable as possible throughout your treatment.

Infusions For Side Effects

At HOAF, we offer infusion therapies from the comfort of our office. Your HOAF doctor may prescribe infusion therapy in addition to or after treatment, such as chemotherapy, in order to help you feel your best. Options include:

IV hydration therapy administers fluids, electrolytes and nutrients directly into your bloodstream. This treatment provides immediate results by replenishing your body with essential minerals and vitamins, particularly after chemotherapy and its associated side effects.

Electrolyte replenishment infusions can assist cancer patients suffering from dehydration or electrolyte imbalances resulting from treatments or their side effects.

Other medications, such as nausea and steroids, may be delivered to patients via infusion.

Holistic Support At HOAF’s Supportive Care Clinic

The Supportive Care Clinic, located at The Pines in Fredericksburg, VA, is dedicated to providing holistic care for patients at any stage of their treatment. Our approach focuses on addressing both the mental and physical aspects of healing. Alongside managing physical symptoms, we support patients’ mental well-being through offerings such as pet therapy, designed to alleviate the stress of cancer treatment. In addition to helping patients manage their side effects, we also help support patients in coping with a cancer diagnosis, handling anxiety and depression, understanding their condition, planning for advanced care, and providing caregiver support.

Tips For Managing Symptoms

There are different ways to help cope with your side effects and symptoms, including lifestyle changes and medication. Our team will help determine a plan for your symptoms depending on your specific needs. Recommendations may include:

  • Medicine: We may prescribe medication to help manage side effects such as nausea or pain. At HOAF, we offer on-site prescription services for your convenience, eliminating the need to visit a pharmacy after your visit.

  • Hydration: Drink plenty of water every day—1 to 2 liters.

  • Diet Changes: While nausea or a decrease in appetite might make eating more difficult, maintaining proper nutrition will help with energy levels as well as overall healing. In addition to making sure you eat a balanced diet of proteins, fruits and vegetables, try to avoid foods with strong smells that may increase nausea. We also advise eating several smaller meals throughout the day instead of three main meals a day, while having healthy snacks in between.

  • Light Exercise: Staying active as much as possible is important during treatment, and may help you feel better. We recommend scaling down your regular exercise routine, or opting for low-impact activities such as walking or yoga.

  • Emotional Support: Navigating health conditions can be emotionally taxing. Take time to care for your emotional wellbeing. Try joining a support group, seeking counseling or making time for relaxing activities such as journaling, surrounding yourself with supportive family and friends or getting a massage.

When To Visit The Hospital
