Hematology

Hematology is the branch of medicine that specializes in blood disorders. Our hematologists have received extensive training in diagnosing, treating and managing diseases of the blood, bone marrow and lymphatic system. There are many blood disorders such as anemia, bleeding disorders, hemophilia, cancers and blood clots. Blood is a special liquid in the body composed of four main parts: red blood cells, white blood cells, plasma and platelets. Your blood has several vital functions such as giving your body energy by bringing oxygen to the tissues and lungs, fighting infections, regulating your temperature and forming clots to prevent excess bleeding. If you suffer from a blood disease, it means that your blood isn’t working properly. Our team of experienced, compassionate hematologists offers leading advancements and customized treatment plans to support our patients’ healing.

Medical Oncology

Our devoted medical oncologists aim to diagnose, treat and care for cancer patients in the Fredericksburg and Stafford communities. We offer leading-edge treatments, such as chemotherapy, immunotherapy, biotherapy and participation in clinical trials, to fight all types of tumors and cancers. At HOAF, we believe in collaborative care, meaning your medical oncologist will lead the charge for all your treatment planning but will also coordinate with other providers and specialists as needed to build a comprehensive care team just for you. Our medical oncologists take a holistic approach to your health, treating the whole person as opposed to just your cancer. This allows our team to take a personalized approach to developing treatment plans that are unique to your cancer prognosis and diagnosis. HOAF is dedicated to our patients’ best interest and always puts their needs first.

Infusion icon

Infusions

Infusions introduce a solution or medicine into your vein as a form of treatment for cancer care, a blood disorder or for supportive symptom management. Our calm, relaxing environment serves as the perfect destination to receive your treatment. Whether you decide to sit in one of our comfortable infusion chairs inside of one of our state-of-the-art facilities or take advantage of our peaceful large back porch on a crisp day, your session is designed with your convenience in mind. We offer many types of infusions such as chemotherapy, biotherapy, immunotherapy, IV antibiotics, iron replenishment therapy, hydration, electrolyte replenishment or supportive medications. At HOAF, we value our patients’ time and have a dedicated scheduler for infusions in order to make sure there is a time that is convenient for you.

Side effect management icon

Side Effect Management

At HOAF, we understand side effects from treatments such as chemotherapy can take a toll on your body and make you feel lousy. Our goal is to take a proactive approach to managing your symptoms before they get to the point where you feel downright miserable. Chemotherapy is a powerful drug that works to kill cancer cells, but in the process, it may also damage healthy cells, which may produce unwanted symptoms like upset stomach, diarrhea, vomiting, loss of appetite, fatigue and more. Our team strives to prescribe an approximate dosage that effectively targets your cancer while providing the least amount of damage as possible to the good cells, thereby reducing symptoms and relieving discomfort. We may also go back and adjust your dosage if need be, or offer an infusion session to bring you some relief.

Surveillance clinic icon

Surveillance Clinic

Our Surveillance Clinic is located at The Pines in Fredericksburg, VA, and is here to serve the urgent care needs of all our patients. We aim to keep our patients out of the hospital by managing their symptoms related to chemotherapy or other illnesses that may occur during treatment such as a cold, the flu and certain infections that may be more severe. When a patient is receiving cancer treatment, it weakens the immune system. As a result, your body has a harder time fighting infections. Our Surveillance Clinic gives our patients the opportunity to be seen for those needs without exposing themselves to other illnesses in an outside setting such as a hospital or urgent care. We recommend our patients call first, so you can receive the care you need at a time that is best for you.

On-site prescription services icon

On-Site Prescription Services

At HOAF, we prioritize our patients’ convenience. With our on-site prescription services, you have the access to pick up most of your medications right here in our office. From antibiotics and supportive medications for treating symptoms to holistic supplements, antidepressants and more, most of your prescriptions may be filled right here at HOAF. We strive to make your healthcare easily accessible, and with our on-site prescription services, you can avoid that extra stop at the pharmacy on the way home. However, if one of our doctors prescribes an opioid, that is something you will have to pick up at the pharmacy as we do not carry them in-house. Ask our team about this service at your next appointment.

Paxman therapy icon

Paxman™ Cooling Therapy

We are proud to offer Paxman™ Cooling Therapy to help patients reduce hair loss during chemotherapy. This FDA-approved therapy cools the scalp before, during, and after chemotherapy sessions, constricting blood vessels to limit the amount of chemotherapy drugs reaching hair follicles. This process helps protect follicles from damage, thereby minimizing chemotherapy-induced alopecia.

Supportive care clinic icon

Supportive Care Clinic

At HOAF, we recognize the unique challenges that come with a cancer diagnosis. Beyond the physical side effects of both cancer and its treatments, many patients also face significant emotional challenges. This is completely normal, and our Supportive Care Clinic at Hematology Oncology Associates of Fredericksburg is here to assist. Located at The Pines in Fredericksburg, our clinic provides essential support for cancer patients at every stage of their journey.
