Types Of Cancer-Fighting Medicines

Our team of medical oncologists treat your illness with leading-edge treatments to offer you the best outcomes. Depending on your situation, our team may recommend treating your cancer using chemotherapy, biotherapy, immunotherapy or hormonal therapies. Before you begin treatment, our doctors will discuss with you all your viable options to come up with the most optimal course of action.

This cancer treatment is designed to attack cancer cells, stopping them from multiplying, growing and dividing rapidly. To do this, it uses anti-cancer drugs, usually given through an IV, to destroy those harmful cells and prevent growth.

Some cancers may rely on hormones (chemicals) to grow. In these situations, hormonal therapy may be beneficial in slowing or stopping their spread by halting the body’s likelihood to produce these hormones or altering the way hormone receptors act in the body.

Biotherapy is a type of medicine that uses living organisms to fight cancer. Using the body’s immune system, either directly or indirectly, biological therapy stops cancer from growing, halts cancerous cells from spreading and makes it easier for the body to find and attack cancer.

Immunotherapy is a type of biotherapy that alerts the body’s immune system to find and destroy cancer cells. Your immune system naturally detects and destroys harmful invaders, including cancer cells. Immunotherapy enhances this process, empowering your immune system to better identify and eliminate cancer.

What Happens During Your Medical Oncology Visit

If you are planning to visit us at HOAF, it is because a provider such as your primary care physician noticed a change in your body and they recommend further evaluation and testing. Our compassionate, expertly trained team of medical oncologists are here to help get to the root of your situation by providing an accurate diagnosis and developing a personalized treatment plan that you feel good about.

  • Medical History Discussion: At your first appointment, one of our oncologists will go over your complete medical history, such as prior surgeries, any medications you may take and your family health history, to help determine if you are at higher risks of other illnesses.

  • Evaluation & Physical Exam: Your doctor will perform a thorough exam and check for signs of a specific cancer diagnosis.

  • Testing: You may be scheduled for more tests, such as imaging or blood work to gather further information about the cancer.

  • Discussion & Diagnosis: If your medical oncologist makes a cancer diagnosis, they will explain your condition in great detail, including the type and stage of cancer, so you are well informed.

  • Treatment Options: Our oncologists will outline potential treatment plans, which may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation or other options. We will explain the benefits, the risks and side effects.

The goal of this visit is to create a clear and personalized treatment plan and address any concerns you may have. You will have the opportunity to ask questions about your diagnosis and prognosis and learn about next steps. Our care team is here to support you throughout your journey.
