Immunotherapy

A Leading-Edge Treatment In Fighting Cancer

Immunotherapy is a type of biotherapy that uses your own immune system to fight cancer by either stimulating or suppressing it. The goal is to assist the immune system in recognizing and targeting cancer cells. Depending on your diagnosis from your medical oncologist, we may suggest immunotherapy as a treatment on its own or in conjunction with other cancer fighting methods. At HOAF, your care and healing journey are our top priorities, and we strive to deliver leading-edge treatments that deliver optimal healing.

Using Immunotherapy As Your Cancer Treatment

A major role of your immune system is detecting and getting rid of abnormal cells and preventing or slowing the growth of several types of cancer. For example, often immune cells are found in and around tumors. These are called tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes or TILs. This is a common sign that the immune system is reacting to the tumor. The good news is that patients whose tumors contain TILs respond better to treatment and have a higher chance at survival, according to the National Cancer Institute

Unfortunately, cancer cells sometimes are able to avoid being killed by immune system cells. For instance, they may:

  • Show genetic changes, making them less noticeable to the immune system
  • Contain proteins on the surface that turn off the immune system cell receptors
  • Alter the surrounding healthy cells to disrupt the immune system’s natural response to the cancerous cells

The benefits of using immunotherapy as a treatment is it helps strengthen your immune system to target and fight cancer cells by preventing them from evading your body’s natural response.

Types Of Immunotherapy

There are several types of treatments that harness the body’s immune system to fight diseases like cancer. Depending on your diagnosis and prognosis, your medical oncologist will determine the most appropriate type of treatment. The main types of immunotherapy are:

These are lab-made molecules designed to bind to specific targets on cancer cells. Some monoclonal antibodies mark cancer cells so the immune system can detect and destroy them. Others can block the cancerous growth or deliver toxins directly to the harmful cells.

These drugs block proteins that prevent T cells from attacking cancer cells, allowing the immune system to recognize and destroy them more effectively.

This treatment uses proteins known as cytokines to help regulate and boost immune response.

Vaccines are designed to stimulate your immune system to attack diseases or illnesses. You may associate vaccines as being given to you when you’re healthy as a proactive measure in preventing infections, but they can also help treat existing cancers.

This therapy takes T cells from a patient and modifies or enhances them in a lab to better recognize tumor cells, and then injects them back into the patient.

This approach uses viruses that have been genetically modified to infect and kill tumor cells.

This approach uses viruses to boost the body’s immune response to treat certain kinds of cancer.

Benefits Of Immunotherapy

There are many benefits to utilizing immunotherapy as your cancer treatment. Immunotherapy enhances your immune system’s capability to target cancer cells with precision, often causing fewer side effects than traditional treatments. It can also provide long-lasting protection by boosting immune memory, which reduces the chances of cancer recurrence. Additionally, it is effective for cancers that resist other treatments and is less likely to cause drug resistance. Furthermore, our doctors at HOAF always use a personalized approach and tailor the treatment to our individual patients, offering hope for a wide variety of cancers while improving outcomes.
